  • The Limpopo Province It comprises a host of private places to explore, including nearby Tshipise and Thohoyandou - the commercial center for the Venda community, offering a true African experience in this delightful town.

  • Mapungubwe (Venitia Mine) Along the Limpopo River stands the ruins of the Mapungubwe people. This is one of the richest archaeological sites in Africa . Researchers claim it was the first capital of the ancient kingdom of Great Zimbabwe . A series of excavations in the 1930s uncovered a royal graveyard which included a number of golden artifacts; among them three golden rhinos, a scepter and a wide assortment of jewelry. In fact, gold and ivory apparently formed the basis of the transformation of early societies from rank-based groups (such as the Zulu nation) to class-based societies, where distinctions were based on wealth and a sacred leadership. The emerging class distinctions are reflected in the Mapungubwe's settlement.

  • Polokwane Formerly know as Pietersburg, Polokwane is the site of our local international airport, just an hour and a half drive from Shakawa, and also features the Bakone Malapa Open Air Museum . For insights into an ancient lifestyle, look no further than the traditional North Sotho Kraal, nine kilometers south of Polokwane. Here, people practice tradional skills such as basket weaving, clay pot crafting, fiuniture and utensil manufacture, hide curing and beer brewing.

Polokwane's impressive Civic Plaza features artfully landscaped gardens with walkways, streams and ponds. The Art Museum in the Library Gardens houses a comprehensive art collection. A bandstand dating from the 1920s stands on the southwestern corner of the town square. And the restored Dutch Reformed Church houses the Hugh Exton Collection, which comprises 22,000 glass negatives and many local photographs of historic value.

  • Kruger National Park This internationally renowned park is just two hours drive from Shakawa One of the world's premier game-viewing destinations, Kruger features closequarters viewing of huge plains game herds, including Giraffe, Zebra, Salbe and Wildebeest. This is the land of the fabled "Big Five:" Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Cape Buffalo and African Elephant. And let us not forget the 70 mph speedster, the Cheetah and the laughing, but not necessarily humorous, Hyena and the ever-dangerous Hippo. Bring plenty of film and do pay attention to your guide. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  • Elephant Back Safari This is a one-day excursion to Mooketsi, near Tzaneen. You can spend a couple of hours either riding on or walking with elephants, or simply just share some quality time with these magnificent creatures as they wander through the South African bushveldt.

  • Big Game Safari Enjoy a game drive in nearby Leshoka, where you can view rhino, buffalo, lions and a wide range of African antelopes.

  • Lion Breeding Spend a pleasant morning or afternoon at a lion breeding reserve where you can watch lions feeding at close quarters. And take some memorable photos.

  • Magoebaskloof Day Trip This special day itinerary includes Debegeni Waterfalls, The Big Boabab Tree Site, Tea Plantation, Crocodile Farm, plus a thirst-quenching finish to the tour at the Iron Crown Pub & Grill.
